Determining your cat's age is not easy if you
don't have a kitten. Usually for kittens
veterinarians can determine roughly how old it is by the ratio of kitten teeth they
have to permanent teeth. This method also only works on kittens at the age of 4 months
and under. Radiographs, or x-rays, can be used for kittens at the age of 6 months
and under to see how far along they are in their bone growth process.
For older cats we
can only guestimate their ages by the wear and tear on their teeth. Supposedly the
older a cat is the more tear it will have on it's teeth (makes sense!) However, this is
not always reliable since some cats chew on bones and other hard things while others
get a lot of wet food. It all depends on the breed and diet of the cat.
There is also no equivalency between a certain amount of human years to a certian
amount of cat years. For dogs it is said that for every
one human year a dog ages
7 years but that is not so for our feline friends! Below I have included a cat
age calculator provided by AJ Design Software which can roughly estimate
how old
your cat is equivalent to human years. Remember, this is
really just an estimate and many people who take in cats from the street never
find out just exactly how old their new friends are.
